An English saying goes, “Experience is better than knowledge.” Similarly, a Somali proverb states, “An older person is wiser than you.” These proverbs introduce the topic of this article: the necessity of experience in politics.

The word politics is not Somali; it is derived from Arabic, meaning good governance or managing the interests of citizens effectively. It does not imply deceit, secrecy, or manipulation.

Politics refers to the methods or systems a government uses to manage the country it governs, employing various approaches. Politics is the framework that guides how a government operates, overseeing the implementation of governmental functions. Typically, it is overseen by the government’s leadership, including the legislature, executive, and judiciary.

After the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991, the country experienced widespread disintegration in politics, education, the economy, and societal order. This led to a situation where individuals sought roles they were neither qualified for nor experienced in, resulting in political confusion and chaos.

Recently, there has been a noticeable rise in young people eager to engage in politics. They aspire to join the government and serve their country, people, and faith. Youth have the right to participate in restoring peace and stability in the nation and work towards alleviating the ongoing conflicts and instability.

The youth represent the country’s current and future potential, possessing the capability to drive change and lead progress and development. The history of the Somali Youth League (SYL) offers an enduring lesson on the critical role young people can play in advancing national interests.

Recognizing the importance of youth participation in politics and national stability, I believe that the youth, though vital, have often neglected their appropriate roles. Instead, they have pursued responsibilities for which they lack the requisite experience and expertise, potentially harming the country’s development and progress.

When hiring someone for a job, it is essential that the candidate possesses the necessary knowledge and experience. Without these qualifications, the role will not be executed as intended or expected.

For example, you might see a young graduate with no prior government office experience aspiring to be a Member of Parliament, Minister, or Judge. Similarly, some young people may have some private sector or NGO experience but lack any governmental background yet still aim for the highest political positions. This issue is often exacerbated by a clan-based power-sharing system that overlooks qualifications and experience. This flawed approach to politics has contributed significantly to the country’s instability and lack of progress over the past 30 years.

President Farmaajo, in a speech to university students in Garowe, once said, “We are working in a flawed system.” I agree with his statement and firmly believe that experience is a crucial determinant for any position of responsibility.

Frequently, one hears young people passionately advocating for political involvement, arguing that it is “the youth’s time.” While this is true, they must play their roles responsibly and not pursue positions for which they are unqualified, lacking the necessary knowledge and experience.

When constructing a house, one begins with the foundation. Similarly, any endeavor must start from the ground up. A person should progress through their career step by step rather than leaping to the top. How can someone with no prior government experience become a Member of Parliament, Minister, or Chief Justice? Skipping several ranks is akin to starting to recite the Quran from Surah Al-Baqara without learning the basics—a near-impossible feat.

Somali politics reminds me of the saying, “It is premature yet being forced.” This phrase originated from a young Somali girl pushed into marriage before reaching maturity, leading to regret. Similarly, youth who skip foundational roles to pursue top governmental positions often face political failure, which contributes to national instability and regression. Why not start from lower-level roles and gradually ascend, gaining experience along the way?

Recommendations:

To Somali youth everywhere:

  1. Recognize that you are the future of the nation, today and tomorrow, and have the power to influence its development.
  2. Focus on building your career step by step, starting from foundational roles.
  3. Pursue politics with conviction and dedication, not impulsive passion.
  4. Work consistently towards national peace and stability.
  5. Uphold and strengthen Islamic values and the national constitution while promoting Islam.
  6. Continuously enhance your skills and knowledge.
  7. Propose innovative ideas in both business and politics.
  8. Promote peace and resolve societal conflicts.
  9. Raise awareness and work towards national unity among Somali youth globally.

To the Somali government (both federal and regional):

  1. Ensure the welfare and rights of youth.
  2. Develop policies that support youth empowerment.
  3. Advocate for youth rights.
  4. Improve access to education for young people.
  5. Create job opportunities for youth.
  6. Invest in the youth (investing in youth is investing in the future).

Conclusion:

Collaboration among all segments of Somali society can lead to national progress. Protecting and empowering youth ensures the country’s future and sustainability. Strengthening connections and supporting young people fosters their aspirations and values, making it imperative for the government to prioritize Somali youth’s well-being and development for a brighter national future.
